Hollyhock: a Hobbit House in Downtown Manitou Springs
Hollyhock is a 438 sq. foot mountain-chic dwelling with a hobbit door entry, a sleeper loft and all kinds of tiny house appeal. At the center of a downtown Manitou homestead, with chickens, bees and gardens, Hollyhock is just seconds' walk to coffee houses, restaurants, specialty shops, mineral springs, hiking trails & more. Enjoy the quiet, uplifted environment and easy access to Sunwater Spa for a yoga class, soak, or treatment. We also offer discounts to classes & gatherings at our homestead.
Writers, artists, recreators and sight-seers, welcome to a cozy, little abode that's perfect for singles, couples, or a couple with a child!
Hollyhock is professionally cleaned with green products before each use.
There is a Queen-sized sofa bed with memory foam mattress on the main floor and a full-sized bed in the loft sleeper (for adventurous folks who can "crawl-climb" tiny house steps and who don't mind confined spaces only).
The cottage kitchenette is conveniently set up to make a hot cup of coffee, for light meal preparation and for storing munchies for your stay. It contains a dorm fridge, induction burner, crockpot, toaster, microwave, cutlery, plates and flatware.
Lounge in the living area with your feet in front of the electric fireplace and watch Roku TV (with Netflix and Hulu provided gratis). Free wifi is available to guests as well.
On the grounds outside the cottage, identify plants, observe frequent visitors from the animal realm or just recline on a park bench in the dragon garden to take in the mountain views.
Need an additional place on site for other family members or friends to stay while you're loving life at Hollyhock?
The Nest, a 309 square foot cottage located a mere 30 feet down the steps from you, might be the place. The Nest sleeps up to 3 people. The 2 bedroom, 2 bath "Library Loft" and "The Keys to Old Colorado City" in neighboring Old Colorado City are also excellent option, and sleeps up to 6 each. Book instantly on Airbnb or contact the owner for details.
You'll have this studio-style bungalow all to yourself, with your own private off-street parking (a rarity in Manitou Springs) a few feet from the entry, and downtown Manitou Springs within a minute's walk.
Stroll the grounds and gardens of The White Yarrow Inn & Farmette, feed the hens and the lion head bunny, gather some eggs (in season) from the nesting box for breakfast, or observe the bees down in the grotto.
Come and go as you please via the stone steps by the faerie garden or meander through the charming neighborhoods lining the foothills of Manitou Springs on your way to the mineral springs, Sunwater Spa, Miramont Castle (high tea!), the Manitou Incline, the Cog Railway to Pikes Peak's summit, or one of several readily accessible mountain trails with breath-taking views of the Pike's Peak region.
Free, private parking for one guest car on site. Easy in and out to area attractions such as Pike's Peak, Cave of the Winds, Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Park, Cheyenne Canyon, Seven Falls, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Broadmoor and so much more.
Interaction with guests
We give our guests maximum privacy, but welcome interactions and enjoy being a resource regarding the town of Manitou Springs, the attractions here, and the unique natural features of the area.
Someone will be on site or on call for the duration of your stay. Text the owners with any questions, concerns or needs.
Other things to note
Guests should keep in mind that Hollyhock is designed as a boutique experience. This means that staying at Hollyhock is about enjoying little, high quality spaces and using resources in modest amounts.
If you are a larger or taller person, staying at Hollyhock may present some challenges for you, including stepping through the four-foot entry door, getting in and out of the sleeper loft, and using the small shower.
It is also worth noting that Hollyhock was designed with water and energy conservation in mind. With a 19--gallon water heater, hot water lasts 7-8 minutes in Hollyhock before the system needs to re-heat. Thus, we recommend short showers, especially if there are others with you during your stay. In sum, Hollyhock is for those who enjoy the distinctive, who prefer centrality to suburban size, and want to live large by living small.
Your hosts, Jillian and Chris, are certified permaculture designers who are engaged in creating a sustainable way of life in harmony with each other and with nature.
Jillian is a Master Herbalist and owner of TLC, a gathering company, which produces events that bring people into deeper connection with themselves and each other through food, hand-crafting and ritual. She also owns In Joy Baking Co., which produces organic, gluten-free bread mixes, chocolates and other foods. Her Peruvian dark chocolate truffles are complementary for every Sunwater Spa guest who receives a massage, facial or other treatment.
Chris is a yoga instructor, homesteader and owner of The White Yarrow, LLC (the vacation rental company that owns and operates Hollyhock and The Nest, among other properties). Chris is your primary host and is usually just a text or call away should you need anything at all during your stay.
The White Yarrow Inn & Farmette, which is what we call our home (the main house), Hollyhock (where you are staying), The Nest (cottage behind the main house in the grotto) and the surrounding lands, are in the third year of a multi-year plan to become "a model of joyful and prosperous, locally-focused living for other people and communities to follow."
Soil development, water management and productive planting on the 1/3-acre grounds of the White Yarrow began in 2015, as did creating a permaculture design for the land, setting up a composting operation, and establishing a home for chickens and bees. This Winter, we are launching a few select gatherings and classes to deepen in self awareness and community connection.
We welcome guests' questions and involvement about our journey toward a joyful and sustainable way of living. Thank you for coming to Hollyhock at The White Yarrow!
